Ladies...assorted flowers or tulips?
what kind of flowers should i get for my 1 month gf? i'm not at the romance stage yet so i dont want to get her roses and give her the wrong idea...i do however want to get her flowers
assorted tulips have been hard to find for me, so would it be okay if i got her assorted other kind of flowers? like a mix of daisys, lillies, and some other ones?
also, what flowers do i avoid? which ones should i try for excluding roses (the flower of love)
also, do i get her a teddy bear or no?
overall, i dont want to freak her out. thanks.

Ok, I love lilies (not calla but like day lilies or stargazer lilies). I'm needing some flowers that would look good with lilies. I need pink orange and yellow flowers too (those are my wedding colors). Any pics with pink orange and yellow lilies w/other flowers would be great (like in a bouquet, not just links of random pink orange or yellow flowers, unless it is to show me something that will look good with the lilies). Thanks! =)

Latex Flowers vs. Silk flowers?
Has anyone used Latex flowers? I cant decide between the two. I am getting married july 2007 and the florist has told me every flower I want will just wilt too quick. I just dont want my photos to come out funny looking. Or spend more money on fake flowers than real. That is just crazy. I have been told latex is better for photos and then the same with silk. Im so lost. Help.

i wonder why she says they will wilt too quickly though? if you have her made a hand tied bqt, with a few inches of stem sticking out at the bottom you can put it ina vase with water and stick it in a fridge, the cold will keep it fresh. after the ceramony, just stick it back in there. as for the boutineers and corsages, have her use a long lasting flower such as carnations. for your centerpeices, if she is using oasis (a floral foam that soaks up water) and does them the day before and keeps them in refridgeration until you have to have them out, they will be fine.

however, silks (or latex) will give you the option of keeping your bqt for many years, as even preserved fresh flowers dont last forever. I have a friend who put her silk bqt in a vase and surrounded it with wedding photos and mementos for a very pretty display
Reply:your florist should be able to take some precautions to be sure the flowers are still fresh. I got married in Texas in July last year. It was so hot and my tulips that were out of season and were shipped via UPS were still fresh. They were shipped here from Holland in ice, and as soon as I got them I put then in ice water and put them in front of the air conditioner, there wasnt enough room in the fridge. I left the alone and arranged them the night before the wedding (they arrived the day before). After they were arranged, I put them back in ice water and back in from of the a/c. They stayed there until about an hour before the wedding. They stayed in water just until we were ready to walk down the aisle. They lasted through the wedding and reception and I got all of my pictures. Now, I used silk flowers for decorating the church because I decorated two days before. But the flowers on my cake and the bouquets, boutineers, and corsages were all fresh. My tulips, which are a cold weather flower, did just fine in the hot Texas heat. I'm sure your florist could make something work. One thing I did for the corsages and boutineers is I left the stems a little longer than needed so they could still get water and not ruin the ribbon or get wet. Then before they were pinned on, we cut the stems off.

Latex Flowers can easily be shaped into almost any design you want because the stems are wired and hand wrapped. They have a latex coating over natural parchment and you almost have to smell them to tell they are not a real flower. They can have a multitude of color variations.

The flowers have all dropped off my friend's Cymbidium orchid. What should she do?
I recently bought a large Cymbidium orchid for a friend. After less than a couple of weeks all the buds and flowers fell off.
The florists where I bought it from gave me the following care instructions. Water the plant by spraying the soil to keep it moist. Never let it dry out, and don't spray the flowers. I was also told to feed the plant every two weeks with orchid plant food.
My friend placed the plant in her living room during the day and moved it to the cooler kitchen in the evening. The living room was occasionally warm, and sometimes humid as it's just off the kitchen.
After the buds and flowers fell off my friend searched the internet for some advice and was told to move the plant to a cooler room. It has now been placed on the windowsill in a cooler room where is it left day and night.
Can anyone help explain why this may have happened and what I should tell her to do to get it to flower again?

Dynamite Plant Food is the very best timed-release fertilizer because the nutrients are gradually and consistently made available to the orchids
A few basics on nutrition: First, you need to fertilizer your orchids on a regular basis. People have told me they just hang their cattleya in a tree and never feed it and it has 20 blooms. My response has always been "If you fertilized it, you would have 40 bigger blooms!" Orchids, for some reason, tolerate us!
Second, weekly, weakly. Smaller doses on a regular basis produce more consistent growth and healthier plants. Consider only eating one meal every other day. If your schedule only allows you to fertilize monthly, at least do it every month. Make sure that your orchid is slightly damp when you fertilize and don't over-compensate the fertilizer concentration.
Reply:Orchids don't like being moved around. Make sure to keep the soil moist, just mist-spraying it won't do.
All plants loose their flowers. It's the natural progression. If she wants flowers that don't fall off get silk flowers. The orchid will bloom again next season.

Which flowers/flowering bushes or trees should I plant?
I live at the beach in NC. I'm not ocean front but the soil is still very sandy. We live in an area with mostly old folks who are retired and outside planting new flowers all the time. The homeowners association does all the grass mowing but the flower beds are up to us. And we are constantly getting dirty looks and comments about how bad our bed looks.
I am possibly the worst gardner known to man. My mother could kill everything and I inherited her ability with my fathers complete disinterest. I can't tell the difference between flower and weed. I want to find something that will grow in the sandy soil, that blooms most of the summer, and that requires lil maintance. It can be tree, bush, vine whatever--as long as its low maintenance. I can water about once a week. And maybe monthly I'll go out there and (deadhead, or add a fertiziler stick, or whatever one does). But you better spell it out for me if you don't want it to die.
Suggestions? Anything will be appreciated!!

Plants and sand, what joy. I'm from Miami originally, so even though we weren't near the beach, we had a lot of the same problem. You also need something that will tolerate the salt spray, the occasional storm surge residue, and, of course....the blasting sun. Now.....I live in Virginia and summer at the Outer Banks, so....I'm kinda familiar with the "issue".
Clear out your beds and get ready!
First thought: Decorative grasses come in many different heights, colors, and frond styles. I'd put them in the background and on the ends. These will keep the maintenance (weeding) to a minimum, they look good even in the winter, and only need a haircut come springtime. Look at some of the funkier ones with verigated leaves, twisted stalks, and make sure you have a mixture of frond types to keep it interesting. You probably don't want to go "pompas" as they get big, and one strong storm in the dry season will really tick off the neighbors: the fronds break off and shed on their yards.
In the center you may want to look at some kind of century plant. They get spike-y, stay green, and send up a nice, tall spire that flowers in any variety of colors. When they spread, they do so in a tight little cluster so they aren't hard to keep up with. Sedum, Yucca, Century plant.....Now, for blooming, shape and ease of care: Salvia (comes in LOTS of colors and is very "poor dirt" tolerent....I mean it grows in the Texas desert for gosh sakes!)
Honestly, if you aren't in for perennials though....for the rest of the planting area: consider decorative pots with annuals, or a planting box that is easily pulled out of the "zone" and re-planted. Sun hardy begonias, and lots of other annuals don't require that much tending if in a pot or box, come in lots of colors, and at the end of the season, you have the option of pulling the pot and over wintering it indoors, or.....just letting it die off in the winter and planting something new in the spring. As long as the pot or box is partially submerged in the surrounding...uhm...sand....it won't dry out as quickly either, so you can keep to your "water once a week" schedule too. Mixing your perrenial grasses, in ground, permenant, with interesting, decorative pots (and face it....they add color too!!) full of happy faced bright flowers that require little tending, and are easily replaced after a hurricane or major storm....will keep you from going nuts, keep you from going broke, keep your maintenance to a minimum....and keep your neighbors off your...uhm....case. (don't you LOVE home owners associations??!!....NOT!!)
One of my favorite resources, even if you don't buy from them.....(they give specifics about height, soil and sun requirements)....try Wayside Gardens (online).
You might be inspired!! They have wonderful things, they give lots of info........and you might find just the color, leaf shape, and "look" that will keep your neighbors from frowning at your purple thumb....
And remember....everything was just a weed until someone liked it enought to name it and plant it on purpose!

If you don't have a "green thumb", get your landscaper to assist you, but Crepe Myrtle is a beautiful bush or tree that loves and is planted throughout your climate area. They're my favorite. Of course, in PA, can't have them. Also, the jasmine is a trailing vine. Sweet William (small flowers for borders, perennial that you do not have to plant each season).
Daffodils for the spring/summer. Petunia trailing or non-trailing would survive in the soil, but in the holes, place a good potting soil. Gardenia bushes are extremely popular in the South. That might get you started, also small azalea bushes, they live in acidic soil, anything succulent (cactus family) Spirea or agapanthus are border plants. Use a geranium (red, pink, or white, with candy tuft at border, the mix in sweet william, lavendar or stella odora lillies to make a pretty garden.

Once they get established, they are pretty much maintenance free since they are suited perfectly for the conditions present. You may have to cut them back once or twice a year to keep them from looking shaggy or water them if you have a drought. Putting mulch down will help keep weeds at bay.
