How can I find out what flowers and plants grow good in my area?

This is our first spring in our new house and I want to take up gardening as a hobby. However, I%26#039;m new to the idea and to the area and really don%26#039;t know what to plant. I%26#039;m not interested in vegetables, just plants and flowers for landscaping. Is there an online website that you know of where I can put in my location and it tells me what does well in my region? I already know about the Arbor Day Site program but it just mostly tells trees.

How can I find out what flowers and plants grow good in my area?
Wayside gardens type in you zip code and then go to the search button and type in your zone for perrenials it is a great site with lots of plants and information good Luck!
Reply:http://www.gardenweb.com/

They have become very annoying commercial with to many pop ups but its the best place on the net for garden advice that I know of.
Reply:Go with %26quot;thisbrit%26quot;. The extension agent should be in your local phone book or contact your state-grant university for the number. This is a tremendous source of information regarding what to, how to, and problems in your garden and it is free.

Stay away from any of the big chain stores for advice. If the person giving the advice isn%26#039;t in business for themselves it speaks volumes of their ability. Local Nurseries which cater predominately to Landscapers are great, however, they generally do not allow you to shop, browse, purchase unless you are on their list of customers.

As an aside, the county extension agent can show you how to take and analyize a soil sample for your garden. It is cheap and thorough in it%26#039;s recommendations. Start smart and Good Luck.
Reply:Your area must have a county extension agent in the county town. Call them and ask to speak to a person with the garden/veggies/flower skills.
Reply:You can call or go to a local landscape company , better to go there, and ask a competant person working there, you can also probably find answers by google, you have a few options I am sure.
Reply:Many areas have Master Gardener groups. You can also check at local Nurseries and landscape businesses. A call to your local Chamber of Commerce can be of help here.
Reply:You can try this website from Homedepot:

http://plant-guide.com/HomeDepotForm.asp

Type your zone in there and choose category (ex: annual, perennial, bulbs, etc).

I think you will like it.
Reply:Go for a walk around the area you live in and take note of the plants that are growing in your neighbors gardens, if it grows there then you can surely grow them in your garden. If you don%26#039;t know the name of the plants you see, I%26#039;m sure your neighbors would be more than happy to let you know and if they don%26#039;t know ask if you can have a leaf or a cutting and take it to the nearest nursery for an identification. That%26#039;s what I would do.
Reply:Try hgtv.com, they have all the gardening shows on video %26amp; show plans, plants for your zone %26amp; care instructions. bhg.com is another good site.

My boyfriend didn't get me flowers for Valentine's, what should I do?

We%26#039;ve been dating for about 4 months, and everything is going well, although he moved to Miami 3 weeks ago, we said we were going to continue dating because we see a future together.. today Valentine%26#039;s day, I was expecting to get some flowers, or at least a single rose, but nothing, I did not get anything ;-(

he is comming to town tomorrow and said we were going to celebrate it then.

the point is that TODAY is the day I needed to get some love, why guys don%26#039;t get that?? am I being to dramatic?? please advise...should I tell him that it really bother me that I didn%26#039;t get anything??

My boyfriend didn%26#039;t get me flowers for Valentine%26#039;s, what should I do?
First of all, you agreed to celebrate it tomorrow. Therefore you should not expect him to partially celebrate it today. He can%26#039;t read your mind and he feels like you have already agreed to move it to tomorrow. Secondly you shouldn%26#039;t bring this up. The reason? This is not an important thing since you willingly went along with the date change. Why bring this up and potentially ruin the day you Both chose to celebrate?

I mean try to see what it would feel like if the shoe were on the other foot. how would you feel if you both chose to celebrate on the next day and he was mad at You for not sending Him something today? And Say you had already bought him something nice for Friday and here he is griping you out. Wouldn%26#039;t that ruin your mood and make you feel like you just got ambushed in some kind of weird game?

Do you actually want things to work with him or not? You just might run him off with this kind of behavior.
Reply:Dramatic? Yes I think you%26#039;re dramatic. You said that he wants to celebrate tomorrow - what in the world is wrong with that?? I mean he doesn%26#039;t *have* to do anything in the first place, and you%26#039;re mad because he isn%26#039;t doing it on a certain day?? I don%26#039;t think it is going to hurt you to wait just a little bit longer...Maybe he%26#039;s got something real special planned for you. You%26#039;re probably going to feel bad about this if he does.
Reply:YOUR BEING WAYYYY DRMATIC!...chill u been dating this poor guy for 4 months And already demamding if he said you guys would celebrate it tomorrow then so be IT!..I say you dont not mention anything YOUR GOING TO SCARE HIM AWAY!
Reply:you kinda r being a bit dramatic besides gifts arent everything y would a stupid plant change anything at all......just wai till wenever he comes and if nothing happens then u deff. got something to worry about.
Reply:You need to tell him how you feel tomorrow. But wait a little while, just in case he plans on surprising you. You are right, he should have gotten you something today, but thats alright. Maybe he has something BIG for you tomorrow. Hope this helps!
Reply:Yes you are being dramatic - if you both discussed that you will celebrate it tomorrow don%26#039;t expect him to read your mind. It%26#039;s like you%26#039;re setting him up for failure.

In the future if you expect something you have to let him know %26amp; he will make you feel great. You will avoid tons of arguments that way.

I would suggest not telling him that it bothered you - but next year, if you expect something on V-day MAKE SURE HE KNOWS!!!
Reply:your being a little over dramatic in my opinion - but still tell him howyou feel -

simply say i know were celebrationg today - but i wish you wouldve at least sent me a card -

but in his defense a lot of people arent celebrating valentines today - and they live in the same house in the same town - or at least the same town - some people are waiting for the weekend where more time is available and it can be enjoyed, not rushed - so tell him you wish he would have sent you something but your happy you are celebrating this day with him -

not telling him would cheat your self out of how you feel - but i dont think you should have your feelings hurt - or be angry either - if you are with someone you care about - better a day late than to have something rushed to you today that has no thought

not telling him can also set u up for failure in this relationship - if it does bother you - some people dont converse with their partner and hold things in that bother them and by the end of the year you have 9 issues and you fall into an argument and bring all of them up - so make him aware you thought he would send seomthing but your not mad - and you are happy to have him today - let him know its not a big deal - and you need to realize this isnt a big deal yourself - but dont hide your feelings -
Reply:maybe he%26#039;ll suprise you ;)

if not, well he%26#039;s coming tomorrow! he%26#039;ll probably make it up

atleast you got a man
Reply:well if he said he was coming to town tomarrow and you would celebreate then wait till tomarrow because he might have something better then flowers! so if i was you i would wait till tomarrow also becareful with long distance relationships! don%26#039;t work out that good!

I need help figuring out if I need silk or real flowers for my bridal pictures!?

I am having my bridal pictures taken in my hometown. Well actually the town my parents grew up in and where I did most of my growing up. I consider the place I am in now my true hometown. It is where I went to most of highschool at. I am having trouble with my flowers. My florist for the wedding is here and the town where I am taking them is 3 hours away. I have to go down at the begining of the week to take my grandfather to the dr. for surgery and I am staying and helping him and then taking my pictures. So my question is would it be in my best (cheapest) intrest to get silk flowers done there or just a regular flowers? They have great florist there I am just at a loss for what to do. Thanks in advance

I need help figuring out if I need silk or real flowers for my bridal pictures!?
I would call the florist in the town where you%26#039;re having your bridal photos taken and ask if they could make you a small bouquet for the photoshoot. They should be able to do something cheap and along the lines of your actual bridal bouquet. Then you can compare and choose the cheapest. If you chose the one in the town you are now residing, you can keep a vase of water up front, make sure it%26#039;s padded and held secure and put a bouquet in it. You can still go the silk route, but if you%26#039;re having real flowers for the wedding, you may be dissatisfied. Good luck!
Reply:You should just go with silk. Saves having to make sure they stay fresh when you are running here and there. And you can use it as your toss bouquet and then have your real bouquet preserved for memories.

Or you could use the silk on for your keep bouquet and toss the real ones and let them worry about the process of preserving them. Then you can give your silk one to your parents as a memento in a private moment of thanks for the wedding and everything before you leave for the reception. Imagine how proudly displayed it will be next to your lovely wedding photograph.

PS- Tell your grandpa I said to get well soon and to give em all heck.

My 2 yr. old snowball bush only has 3 flowers so far this year. what am I doing wrong?

I bought this a year ago and planted it in partial sun, putting mulch over the top. It had about a dozen flowers on it, and faired well during our midwest winter. So far this Spring, only 3 flowers are showing. Will more appear?

My 2 yr. old snowball bush only has 3 flowers so far this year. what am I doing wrong?
consider that your snowball viburnum was %26#039;forced%26#039; into bloom at the greenhouse so it would look good to you so you%26#039;d buy it.... now, it needs time to develop a good root system and make new branches.... this will take time.... the third year is usually a good one... and ever after....
Reply:It might be mulched too deeply or planted too deeply (it has surface roots). It might have been overwatered (one thing that truely upsets it). It also might have gotten too cold in the winter and some of the buds froze. It is hardy from zones 5a to 9b, so if you are on the %26quot;fringe%26quot; of those ranges or beyond them, expect some reduction in size and performance or if you soil is deeply acidic or highly alkaline - it tolerates a good range of acidity levels, but some areas do tend to naturally fall outside the acceptable range - in which case supplements could help.

You also could potentially have too much nitrogen going on there - which would produce lots of leaves, but fewer flowers, in which case a more balanced fertlizer - or less fertilizer - would do the trick.
Reply:my neighbor has one and they let it bloom, in the fall when it is about to frost they trim it down....then the next year they have HUGE blooms and many many more also.

Can a dog be allergic to flowers and should I bring him to get checked?
My dog is incredibly allergic to flowers (and most other house plants, for that matter).

I took him to the vet, who gave me some meds to temporarily relieve his symptoms.

You should definitely take him. :)
Reply:You should take him to the vets. My dogs like that sometimes and it turned out he was having allergies!
Reply:not all dogs but yea.I think you should take him for a checkup
